Minnesota Sex Education Laws

According to the Minnesota Statutes section 121A.23, “The commissioner of education and the commissioner of health shall assist school districts to develop a plan to prevent or reduce the risk of sexually transmitted diseases. Districts must have a program that has technically accurate information and curriculum.”

Minnesota Sex Education Standards

- Information taught needs to be “comprehensive, technically accurate, and updated curriculum that includes helping students to abstain from sexual activity until marriage.”

- Although information must be technique accurate, it does not need to be medically accurate

- Birth control and condoms are not included in the state standards

- Parents are allowed to review content of instruction and make “alternative arrangements” for content of the instruction

- Requires STD and HIV/AIDS education

- Local school boards determine which subjects will be covered
